Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, Hamish was educated at Christ’s College, the University of Canterbury, and the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1985 and has held senior roles in Wellington and overseas, including postings in Tokyo, Osaka, and London.
He served as Ambassador to Turkey (also accredited to Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and Jordan) and to the Russian Federation (accredited to nine countries across Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Eastern Europe).
At the Ministry’s Head Office in Wellington, he was Director for International Security and Disarmament and twice Senior Adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He became High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in September 2025. Hamish is married to Misako Kitaoka and has three children.
